Connecting with Companies: A Guide to Consulting Agreements for Biomedical Scientists

An essential guide for academic scientists and physicians who are considering consulting work in biomedicine

By Edward Klees, J.D., General Counsel at the University of Virginia Investment Management Company; H. Robert Horvitz, Ph.D., 2002 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine; Professor of Biology, MIT; Member, McGovern Institute for Brain Research, MIT; Member, Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, MIT; Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Before signing a consulting agreement, this must-have reference will help you understand the key issues to consider—from intellectual property, confidentiality, and compensation, to often overlooked issues such as indemnity, different classes of stock, and the relevance of insider trading and securities laws.

Connecting with Companies is an invaluable resource for students, staff, and faculty. To assist you with ordering multiple copies for your institution, we’ve set up convenient discount order options.

Endocytosis cover image

Endocytosis

Cells are surrounded by a plasma membrane that serves as a conduit for signaling and all interactions between cells and their environment. This volume from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Biology describes the multiple mechanisms that mediate endocytosis and regulate the trafficking and sorting of macromolecular cargo along a complex endocytic pathway. Endocytosis enables selective uptake, controls the protein composition of the plasma membrane and plays essential roles in cell physiology, development and human disease.

Father to Son cover image

Father to Son

At the age of 24, James Watson had a scientific discovery to his credit—the structure of DNA—that would win a Nobel Prize and forever change our understanding of genes and inheritance. Now, after a lifetime of accomplishment in research, writing, education, and science advocacy, Watson has delved for the first time publicly into his own lineage to chronicle an archetypical American family from before the Civil War to Vietnam. With its portraits of many memorable characters, illustrated with previously unpublished photographs and period documents, Father To Son brilliantly illuminates the fundamental truth that who we become as individuals is determined by both our genetic and cultural heritage.

Signal Transduction

This new textbook for the first time provides a comprehensive view of the subject by covering both the basic mechanisms involved and the roles of signal transduction in fundamental biological processes.

Myc and the Pathway to Cancer cover image

MYC and the Pathway to Cancer — (Special Pre-Publication Pricing!)

Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine covers all aspects of MYC biology. The contributors discuss its normal functions in the control of cell growth, cell competition, pluripotency, and development, as well as the molecular basis for the effects of the MYC protein on transcription. In addition, they examine how MYC interacts with other proteins, induces apoptosis, and impacts metabolism, genomic stability, and microRNA expression.

Origin and Evolution of Eukaryotes cover image

Origin and Evolution of Eukaryotes — (Special Pre-Publication Pricing!)

This book discusses the evolutionary processes that led to the appearance of eukaryotes and how they subsequently evolved.

The Skin and Its Diseases cover image

The Skin and Its Diseases — (Special Pre-Publication Pricing!)

This book examines the cells that make up the skin and their functions, as well as diseases such as psoriasis that affect the skin and new molecular strategies for treating these.

Rosalind Segal describes how neurons use the endosomal system for long-distance signaling.
The distinctive morphology of neurons, with complex dendritic arbors and extensive axons, presents spatial challenges for intracellular signal transduction. The endosomal system provides mechanisms that enable signaling molecules initiated by extracellular cues to be trafficked throughout the expanse of the neuron, allowing intracellular signals to be sustained over long distances. Read the full text.

The emergence of eukaryotes: Andy Knoll examines the geologic record for evolutionary clues.
Eukaryotic organisms radiated in Proterozoic oceans with oxygenated surface waters, but, commonly, anoxia at depth. Exceptionally preserved fossils of red algae favor crown group emergence more than 1200 million years ago, but older (up to 16001800 million years) microfossils could record stem group eukaryotes. Read the full text.

Denise Barlow and Marisa Bartolomei on epigenetic mechanisms underlying genomic imprinting.
Genomic imprinting affects a subset of genes in mammals and results in a monoallelic, parental-specific expression pattern. Most of these genes are located in clusters that are regulated through the use of insulators or long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). Read the full text.

“Replication of DNA in Microorganisms, Vol. XXXIII” (CSH Symposium, Vol. XXXIII, 1968)

In his foreword to the 1968 Symposium volume, John Cairns describes a state of affairs (“...the exact mechanism of DNA duplication has become more rather than less obscure with the passage of time”) similar to that lamented by Demerec in 1951 (“...the large body of information accumulated since 1941 has made geneticists less certain than ever about the physical properties of genes”).
